The Honda Goldwing of 2006 will be fitted with the worlds first motorcycle airbag as a part of Honda's commitment to reduce
accident related
fatalities by 50% by 2010. This is not the first time Honda has developed new technology to make substantial
improvements to rider safety, in
2004 they pledged to fit their Advanced Braking System to the majority of their bikes by 2007.
The GoldWing airbag itself is a 150 litre capacity unit which deploys within 15/100 ths of a second after four sensors located
on the front forks detect an impact.
The system has, so far, been tested at 31 mph by a specially designed Honda crash test
dummy.
Like with any new innovation, the competition is already considering their own airbag systems and other motorcycle
safety improvements.
